Cable Car Canter
for piano four hands
Winner of the Ensemble for These Times 2025 Call for Scores.

Cable Car Canter (canter: a horse’s gait that is smoother and slower than a gallop, i.e. its motion) is a light-spirited piece for piano four-hands that is meant to mimic the motion of the cable cars of San Francisco. These iconic vehicles are pulled along the streets by a hidden cable underground that each car can grab onto or release as determined by the driver. This results in a gradual speeding up and slowing down as the cable car moves between stops. I tried to capture the whimsical nature and novelty of the cable cars in the music via an off-kilter, upbeat grooving A section and a contrasting, slower but inquisitive B section.
