Pressed Pennies is a memorial to a longtime relationship that, despite deep care on both sides, ultimately had to end. The parting brought no anger or resentment; it carried only a profound sadness for something wonderful that simply could not work. It was the most significant breakup I had ever experienced, and I found myself needing to process it in many ways, including through composition. Pressed Pennies remembers the small things: the shared interests, traditions, and quiet rituals that organically take root and emerge when two people are in love. In writing the piece, I mourned the loss of those moments, the tiny and irreplaceable fragments that were ours alone.
