Street Music

for solo multi-percussion with found objects

Street Music was commissioned by Jacob Fullinwider. Jacob approached me about writing a piece for his senior recital that was based on the rhythms and sounds of Trinidadian calypso and soca music commonly found in the steel pan music each of us was passionately and deeply involved with. The piece is constructed using various rhythmic cells based on some common rhythms found in these musical styles that I use in both a typical and altered form. The cells are then layered one on top of another to create a grooving texture of sound. The piece uses found, metal objects as an homage to the early panmen in Trinidad who would recycle discarded objects from the streets to create their art.
