Virtuous Impatience
for percussion ensemble
The proverbial phrase states that “patience is a virtue.” But when is it more virtuous to be impatient? As climate change continues to rear its ugly head, with habitats forever altered and species driven to extinction, I believe now is the time for Virtuous Impatience. This piece reflects the constant, nagging sense of urgency I feel when I think about life on this planet locked in a constant struggle against loathsome corporations and careless individuals. The music is comprised of irregular 5-bar phrases in which the performers are not always playing in a congruous fashion. This rhythmic dissonance reflects the cognitive dissonance in the dialogues about solutions to our climate issues. The music is always felt with a sense of urgency, of a push and press forward into the next material. All of this is at most times underscored by a constant driving pulse on a single note, the relentless ticking of time as we watch our world slowly burn.
